At first glance, you might think that this family shares the joy of singing together while they practice their usual day in the fishing profession. Ruby sings and her voice mixes with the sounds of the waves and the birds around her; Those birds alone share the fun with her, but her brother and father are integrated into the hunt, smiling at her happiness without knowing what she says or listening to him, but that alone is enough to work. Far away on Angela Rose’s boat is the deaf and boisterous family; They spontaneously create their own happiness.

It is their usual life, and in this way, Ruby completes her life, which is inseparable from the family; without thinking about a real choice regarding her future alone; Since it is something you are not familiar with and it was not possible to think about it.

CODA movie story

CODA won the 2022 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. It is a new version of the French film La Famille Belier, which was released in 2014. It tells about the Belier family, who suffers from deafness, and they have a natural daughter who is talented in music. A music teacher encourages her to complete her studies, so she is put between the decision to leave the family. And study music. However, the French film did not deepen the relationship between the daughter and the family, and it lacks that familiarity in its characters, especially the music professor, who appears harsh and strange in a large way, and the film did not approach his characters emotionally, as we feel in Koda.

Ruby is a teenager whose ambition and future destiny have not yet been formed. She is a peaceful girl who sings because she loves to sing. The music professor admires her talent from the beginning, so he sets her eyes on Berkeley College of Music, which Ruby does not know and does not feel very enthusiastic about.

But Ruby learned since her childhood how her soul listens to music and sounds and watches them, as her family, who are neutral towards sounds in life, also practice disturbance in the simplest things, which made her tend to contradict, which are the regular and harmonious sounds that affect her and bring her different feelings of sadness, joy, and pleasure

However, life tests Ruby in the most difficult situations, which is to decide between her main success in life and her desire to put those closest to her in safety, without the need for anyone, and without giving up or evading that emotional and moral responsibility, which is to take care of them.

And that girl who experienced family warmth, containment, and attachment, it is difficult to pursue her dreams while her compass in life is missing.

It’s something we can do together as a family – if you want to fight, fight with the haters, but we stay together as a family. Ruby is used to hearing these phrases, and as much as they express interdependence, they create unity and separation from the outside world; Ruby’s mother was born deaf and did not learn to communicate with her mother, so she met all of Ruby’s attempts with mockery and disbelief, lacking the desire to support the daughter because she would separate from them.

During Ruby’s concert and her first singing in front of them, her parents discuss the shape of their shirt buttons, so how will Ruby convince her parents permission to dream the furthest from their feelings; will she leave her family to be underestimated by everyone for her desired goal?

This makes those characters in her family characterized by stagnation and dependence as a result of excessive protection, especially since they suffer like any normal person, unlike recently what was in the movie Sound of Metal, which dealt with the idea of deafness in a dramatic and impressive manner, as Robin lost his ability to hear suddenly, which made his feelings tend to be weak and angry for a shock that did not accept it.

Coda Review: Crew and Cast

Riz Ahmed says about that experience, “The culture of the deaf is an identity, it is a rich culture, and we have a lot to learn about it, not because of the deaf, but thanks to it.”

CODA is not a movie about weakness, but how can we overcome it with lightness and simple characters through a story that makes us feel familiar and comfortable despite the expectation of the story? Power exercised by his sister Ruby. (We are not helpless, I am your big brother. We are not stupid. They will wait for you to do everything.) However, he looks dismissive with anxious features.

Where the deaf person often suffers in his childhood from rejection, lack of self-confidence, and a weak ability to make friends, which makes him lack the ability to communicate with others and distorts his self-concept, especially if his parents did not provide him with constant inspection of his needs, as his mother, Jackie, always saw him as oppressed in his destiny.

But when Ruby begins to grow her sense of her dream and her feeling of the helplessness of her family and a greater desire to contain them, so she enables them to go out and integrate as well, despite the fear of the father starting his own business and Jackie’s exit so that she can get to know others other than the deaf community whose members she only sees once a month. His final scenes are animated with music

So when Ruby sings at her last concert, she uses sign language as part of her show. She was finally able to share the fun with her parents after putting herself in the first step to being the Ruby she loves.
